Not passing your End-Point Assessment (EPA) is not the end of your apprenticeship. Most Apprentices in this position resubmit and go on to pass. This article explains what happens next, the difference between a resit and a retake, how the EPA window works, how many attempts you have, and who pays.
Your First Steps After a Fail
Follow these steps as soon as you receive your result.
Read your result email and grading report. If you did not pass, your End-Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO) provides a grading report as standard. It shows where the assessment fell short.
Book your resubmission session. You receive an automated email that tells you how to book it. Book it as soon as you can.
Expect a Success Coach to contact you if you have not booked. The Success Coach guides you through your resubmission plan.
Important: Your EPA window starts running from your original fail. Acting quickly keeps you inside the window and protects your resit option.
Resit or Retake: Which Applies to You
Which route applies depends on whether you are still inside your EPA window. The table below explains both routes.

If your EPA window passes while a resit is pending, the resit becomes a retake. Resubmission is the formal request the Multiverse EPA team makes to your EPAO on your behalf, for either route.
The EPA Window
Your EPA window is a set period of time that starts from your original fail. You can resit at any point before the window closes. Your Success Coach confirms the exact window and dates for your programme and EPAO.
How Many Attempts You Have and Who Pays
The rules on attempts and funding are the same for every programme.
One additional attempt after your first unsuccessful attempt is funded as standard. There is no cost to you or your employer for this attempt.
Any further attempt is not automatic. It requires approval from the Multiverse Certification team, and is considered case by case.
Your Success Coach raises the request for you if a further attempt is needed. You do not need to contact the Certification team yourself.
How Resubmission Works
Resubmission follows the same steps as your first attempt.
Complete your resubmission session and any additional learning agreed with your Success Coach.
When you are ready, your Success Coach books a new Gateway meeting. You go through Gateway again.
Upload your updated work through the same route you used for your first attempt.
The Multiverse EPA team requests the resubmission from your EPAO, and your EPA is scheduled.
