I need an extension or special consideration for my EPA Work-Based Project

How to request WBP extensions or special considerations for unavoidable circumstances, including valid reasons and application steps.

Updated over 3 months ago

We understand that sometimes unexpected and serious situations can arise that affect your ability to complete your Work-Based Project (WBP) by the set deadlines. While these deadlines are generally final, there are provisions for extensions and special considerations in exceptional circumstances.

If You Cannot Meet Your Work-Based Project (WBP) Deadline

Failing to submit your WBP report and any other required elements (like a presentation) by the deadline will, unfortunately, lead to an automatic Technical Fail for your EPA. However, extensions and special considerations can be granted under specific, extenuating circumstances such as:

  • Serious illness (lasting seven or more consecutive days).

  • Bereavement.

  • Medical leave.

  • Significant work-related circumstances beyond your control that completely stop your WBP progress.

Important Notes for WBP Extensions:

  • Annual leave, personal plans, or unauthorised absences are not valid reasons.

  • Employer evidence is crucial for claims of illness, bereavement, etc.

  • Minor difficulties or issues not causing significant time off work usually don't qualify.

  • Requests made more than two days after your submission deadline will not be accepted. Act promptly.

  • A pause on your WBP might be possible if you're off work for an extended period without a set return date, following the same application process.

How to Apply for a Special Consideration

  1. Contact your Success Coach as soon as possible.

  2. Provide Details: Include a detailed statement explaining your circumstances with specific dates.

  3. Manager's Corroboration: Your manager will also need to email a statement supporting your request.

  4. Special Consideration Form: This information will be used for a Special Consideration form, which you'll sign, and then it's sent to your End Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO) for approval.
