Overview

In any organisation, there is a possibility that wider economic circumstances may necessitate a reduction in the size of the workforce. When this happens, the organisation may make part of the workforce redundant; this may be compulsory or voluntary. Compulsory redundancy is enforced by the organisation, whereas voluntary redundancy is offered to employees.

If you have been made redundant we are sorry to hear this, but it is possible that you may be able to continue with your apprenticeship, either without an employer or with a new employer.

Being made redundant can be a stressful and scary situation. First and foremost, you should consider your own wellbeing. If you need support you can reach out to Multiverse’s safeguarding team on [email protected]. They can provide support and resources to help you manage stress and anxiety at this difficult time.

When ready, as soon as you feel able to, you should reach out to your coach to let them know you have been made redundant. Share any details you have been given with them.

When it is made available to you, you will need to share your letter of dismissal/redundancy or redundancy notice with your coach. This is crucial evidence of redundancy that is required to support you to continue your journey with Multiverse and is a requirement from the ESFA.

A letter of redundancy should:

  • Confirm that you have been made redundant (as opposed to dismissed or resigned)

  • Confirm the date that you will be, or have been, made redundant

If you have not been provided with this letter, you should ask your employer to provide written confirmation of your redundancy to share with your apprenticeship training provider.

What happens to my apprenticeship now I have been made redundant?

You have two options based on how far along you are in the programme:

Scenario 1: You have less than 6 months remaining until your planned learning end date (see your Training Plan)

ESFA Rule: The apprentice can continue without an employer with the ESFA funding 100% of the remaining costs of the apprenticeship. If the apprentice finds a new, applicable role then the new employer must take on 100% of the outstanding costs.

If this scenario applies to you, you should speak to your coach who will work with Multiverse’s Compliance and EPA teams to determine whether you are able to continue the remainder of your apprenticeship under this rule. Please note, this is not possible in all circumstances due to the requirements of some end point assessment criteria needing an active job role.

If you are not able to continue to completion under this rule, you are able to stay in learning for up to 12 weeks from the date of your redundancy whilst you look for a new role. If you have not found a new role after 12 weeks, you must withdraw from your apprenticeship.

Scenario 2: You have more than 6 months remaining until your planned learning end date (see your Training Plan)

ESFA Rule: The apprentice can continue without an employer with the ESFA funding 100% of the remaining costs of the apprenticeship for up to 12 weeks whilst the apprentice looks for a new role. If a new, applicable role is found then the new employer must take on 100% of the outstanding costs.

In this scenario, you are able to stay in learning for up to 12 weeks from the date of your redundancy whilst you look for a new role. If you have not found a new role after 12 weeks, you must withdraw from your apprenticeship.
