What to Do If You Get "Upload Error 400" When Adding Project Evidence

What to do if a screenshot or image fails to upload to a project submission with an "upload error 400" message.

What to Do If You Get "Upload Error 400" When Adding Project Evidence

If an Apprentice sees "upload error 400" while adding a screenshot or image to a Project submission, this is a known issue our Engineering team is tracking. This article explains what causes it, what to try first, and how to get help if it does not clear.

What Counts as Evidence in a Project

The Project submission area does not accept file uploads such as PDFs, Word documents or PowerPoint slides. There is no upload option for these file types.

Instead, Apprentices provide evidence in two ways:

  1. Paste text excerpts directly into the submission body.

  2. Add screenshots as images, up to 50 images per project.

Supported image formats:

Format

Supported

PNG

Yes

JPEG/JPG

Yes

WEBP

Yes

GIF

Yes (only the first frame is read)

PDF, DOCX, PPTX

No, not supported at all

What "Upload Error 400" Means

This error appears when the platform rejects an image during upload, before it reaches the marking stage. It is separate from the AI marking tool stalling after a successful upload, which is covered in a different article.

Steps to Try First

  1. Confirm the file is PNG, JPEG, WEBP or GIF. Other formats will not upload.

  2. Reduce the image file size, then try again.

  3. Upload one image at a time rather than several at once.

  4. Refresh the page fully before retrying.

  5. Try a different browser or device if the error persists.

None of these steps are guaranteed to resolve the error. If it continues after trying all five, move to the next section.

If the Error Continues

Contact the Support Team through Atlas. Include:

  • The Apprentice's full name as it appears on The Platform.

  • The cohort name and project title.

  • A screenshot of the error message.

This issue is tracked internally against a known Engineering ticket. The Support Team can check current status and escalate if needed.

A Separate Issue: Video Evidence File Size

Some programmes ask for video evidence as part of a portfolio, not a project. The upload limit for video files is lower than some portfolio requirements ask for. If a video will not upload because of its size, contact the Support Team rather than assuming it is the same error 400 issue, as the cause is different.
