What happens if a learner is Changing Employers?

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Can an apprentice continue with the apprenticeship if they change employers?

An apprentice who has left the organisation can be re-enrolled at a future point. This is not a simple process, however, as it is subject to the new employer being supportive, there being a suitable cohort to join and their previous work/portfolio being of a suitable standard for them to continue.

If an apprentice leaves their employer for reasons other than redundancy:

  • The DfE allows them to stay on the programme for up to 30 days from leaving their employer.

  • They may then take a break-in-learning of up to 8 weeks.

  • By the end of this 12-week period (30 days + 8 week break-in-learning), the apprentice must have started working for a new employer who has agreed to fund the remainder of the programme and notify their coach to start the change of employment process. If a new employer is not found after 12 weeks, the apprentice must be withdrawn.

Employer Actions:

  1. Facilitate Apprentice Contact with Their Coach: The apprentice should notify their coach as early as possible. The coach will initiate the necessary internal processes, managed by Multiverse's Compliance Team.

  2. ‘Stop’ the Apprentice on the Apprenticeship Service: When leaving your organisation, the Apprenticeship Service record should be stopped in the corresponding month. Please see this article on how to ‘stop’ a learner on the Apprenticeship Service.
