PowerBI

Updated this week

What is PowerBI?

Power BI is a free, all-in-one data visualisation tool that offers an extensive set of features for creating interactive reports, dashboards, and visualisations. PowerBI is a fundamental and powerful tool taught throughout our data programmes, with an intuitive interface catering to users of all technical levels.

When will learners need access to PowerBI?

PowerBI is a requirement for our Data Fellowship programme starting from flying start, where we take learners through the fundamentals of PowerBI before moving on to teaching data visualisation techniques, advanced calculation, and statistical analysis.

What access will learners need?

Learners need to be able to access both the web browser and desktop version of PowerBI. PowerBI Desktop can be installed for free from the Microsoft store. A paid licence is not required.

Please be aware that if your organisation works off macOS, chromeOS or Linux, PowerBI is not compatible with your operating system. This means you will need to explore a virtual machine. We have highlighted a number of options within this guide.

What data will be used within PowerBI?

Multiverse places a great deal of emphasis on data governance, and ensures learners are taught how to responsibly work with sensitive and personal data before introducing them to PowerBI.

At the start of the programme, we ask apprentices to understand what data governance exists within their organisation. We also provide guidance on working with data in a safe and secure manner.

Since learners must apply their knowledge to actual business cases, it is crucial that they have access to internal datasets while following any organisational guidelines. You can help support the learner to derive maximum value from the programme by establishing clear guidelines for data management and documenting any internal data governance policies and processes.
