Accessing PowerBI without a Windows Device

Updated over 4 months ago

If your organisation does not use Windows computers and needs to access PowerBI Desktop, here are some alternatives that you can explore:

Virtual Machine

Parallels Desktop: This is a virtual machine that can be installed independently by the learner. It creates a Windows environment within a web browser, allowing access to PowerBI Desktop. Parallels Desktop costs £89.99 per year, per user. Instructions on the installation can be found here.

VirtualBox: This is a free virtual machine that your IT team can install for your learners. It can be more technically complex than Parallels. Instructions on the installation process can be found here.

Partitioning learners devices (Mac only)

Boot Camp: You can use Apple's built-in Boot Camp Assistant to partition your MacBook's hard drive and install a Windows operating system. Once Windows is installed, you can download and install PowerBI Desktop on the Windows partition.

Boot Camp comes pre-installed with the dual-boot utility making this free to access. The only thing you have to download is a Windows ISO file.

Providing a Windows device

You can provide a physical Windows device to the learner, but virtual machines tend to be more cost-effective and don't require the individual to adapt to a new operating system.

By using a virtual machine or providing a Windows device, you can ensure that learners using macOS or other non-Windows operating systems can access PowerBI.
