How do I prove my right to work in the UK?

This article will guide you in proving your right to work and obtaining a share code

Updated this week

Overview

The UK government has set specific eligibility requirements for apprenticeships, which are verified during the Multiverse admissions process. One crucial verification is your right to work in the UK.

A straightforward way to demonstrate your right to work is by obtaining a share code. This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to secure your right-to-work share code.

Proving Your Right to Work

For UK and Irish Citizens

  • If you are a UK or Irish citizen, you are not required to submit proof of your right to work during the initial application process. However, if your application is successful, you will need to provide relevant documentation when commencing your apprenticeship. You can find the list of acceptable documents here.

  • Even though initial proof isn't needed, it’s important to note that you still must meet the 3-year residence requirement. This stipulation requires you to have lived in the UK, EEA (European Economic Area), or Switzerland for the past three years or longer to qualify for government funding.

For Non-UK and Non-Irish Citizens

  • If you are neither a UK nor Irish citizen, the easiest way to demonstrate your immigration status is through a share code. Follow the instructions below to obtain your share code.

  • To expedite your application process, we recommend securing a share code before reaching out to us. Providing this code with your application will enable our Admissions team to process your application more swiftly.

  • If you are unable to obtain a share code, please reach out to our support team. You may also provide alternative documents to prove your right to work. Bear in mind that reviewing other right-to-work documents may take longer than processing a share code, but our team is available to assist you with any inquiries. A list of acceptable documents can be found here.

Note: We no longer accept a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) as proof of right to work.

Important: Ensure you acquire a right-to-work share code, which begins with the letter "W". Avoid using right-to-study or right-to-rent codes.

Obtaining Your Share Code

To obtain a right-to-work share code, please follow these steps:

  1. Read the information provided on the page carefully.

  2. Scroll to the bottom and click on ‘Start now’.

Follow these steps:

  1. Identify the document you used to create your initial settlement application on the UK Visas and Immigration website (e.g., your visa or EU settled status application).

  2. Enter your passport or ID number.

  3. Input your date of birth.

  4. Choose how you wish to receive a security code (via phone or email).

  5. Enter the security code you received.

  6. A page confirming your immigration status will display. Click on ‘Get a share code’ at the bottom.

  7. Indicate why you need the share code by selecting ‘To prove my right to work’.

  8. A screen showing your right-to-work details will appear. Note that you cannot use this page or a screenshot as proof. Click ‘Continue’ to generate your 9-digit alphanumeric share code.

  9. Once you have the code, enter it in the appropriate box in your Multiverse application.

If you've already submitted your application and left the share code box blank, please reach out to us and provide your share code. Our team will then verify your right-to-work eligibility for the apprenticeship.
