Why is the Maths and English initial assessment important?

What the initial assessment is and the impact of the results on your apprenticeship journey

Updated this week

Understanding the Initial Assessment

The Maths and English initial assessment is a standardized evaluation for all apprenticeship candidates in the UK. This assessment focuses on essential literacy and numeracy skills, crucial for meeting the apprenticeship standards. It's an important first step in the application process, ensuring candidates possess the fundamental skills required for success in their apprenticeships.

It is important to note that passing the initial assessment does not exempt candidates from needing to provide formal evidence of Maths and English qualifications at Level 2 (equivalent to GCSE) as mandated by government requirements for apprenticeships.

The Role of Initial Assessment Results

The results of your initial assessment are integral to both your apprenticeship application process and your subsequent learning journey.

What if I don’t pass?

  • If you do not pass the initial assessments, you will not be eligible for acceptance into an apprenticeship program unless you can demonstrate an existing Level 2 (or above) qualification in Maths and English during the application process.

If I pass, do I still have to provide evidence of a Level 2 maths and English qualification?

  • If you pass the initial assessments, you will still need to evidence a Level 2 (or above) maths and English qualification to complete an apprenticeship. If you are completing an application via your current employer, passing an initial assessment means your acceptance onto the programme won’t be hindered by the maths and English requirement, provided you can provide evidence at a later date or achieve the maths and English qualification during the programme with the support of the functional skills team.
